A region rich in history
Ruled succesively by the Romans, the Franks and the Prussians, an agricultural crises in the 19th century eventually led to regional depopulation. Today, however, Hunsrueck is again fertile. The potato enjoys a special place in local cuisine and variants of regional potato dishes are widely available. The Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park holds regular cilinary festivals celebrating local produce such as Viez, a locally made apple wine. Important places to visit in the region include the Hattgenstein Observation Tower, the Idar-Oberstein German Gemstone Museum and the Roman gravesite at Siesbach. Dating from the 12th century, Waldeck Castle, near the village of Dorweiler, and the medieval Dhaun Castle at Hochstetten, as well as the quaint village of Woppenroth, which was one of the main locations for the film Heimat, are also popular local attractions. A close encounter with nature in scenic Hunsrueck The region is rich in flora and fauna and it is not unusual to encounter lynx, badgers and foxes on the extensive network of hiking trails which can be found throughout the area. Hunsrueck's most famous animal is the barbastelle (European Bat) which gained notoriety for delaying the construction of a runway extension at Hahn Airport. As most of the hills are no higher than 400 metres above sea level, families with children can easily indulge in hiking, climbing and cycling opportunities.
